Before your vehicle is collected at the end of your agreement, itβs a good idea to give it a thorough check over π.
Start with the exterior, then take a look inside. To help make things easier, weβve put together some simple advice below π
π Bodywork
Carefully check all panels, doors, and bumpers for any noticeable dents, deep scratches, or paint damage. Minor wear and tear is expected, but anything more significant could result in charges.
πͺ Windows, Mirrors & Lights
Inspect all glass surfaces for chips, cracks, or holes β including windscreens, side windows, rear window, wing mirrors, and head/tail lights. Even small chips can sometimes lead to issues.
π Wheels & Tyres
Look over all alloy wheels or trims for scuffs or kerb damage. Donβt forget to check the tyres for tread depth and condition β there should be no cuts, bulges, or signs of excessive wear. If your vehicle has a spare tyre or space saver, include that in your inspection too.
π§Ό Upholstery & Surfaces
Check the seats, carpets, and headlining for any rips, stains, burns, or excessive wear. Look over the dashboard, door panels, and centre console for scuffs, cracks, or damage.
ποΈ Controls & Features
Make sure all dashboard controls are working properly β including lights, indicators, air conditioning, heating, and wipers. Test any in-built technology like the radio, Bluetooth, sat nav, or infotainment systems. If your vehicle came with accessories such as charging cables or SD cards, these should also be returned.
𧽠Cleanliness
A clean vehicle makes a great impression. While professional valeting isn't required, we recommend giving the car a basic clean inside and out before handover.
The collection agent will inspect your vehicle on behalf of the finance company β ideally in good lighting β so we recommend doing the same when checking it yourself. If possible, ask a friend or family member to give you a second opinion π β two pairs of eyes are always better than one!
On the day, the agent will record your vehicleβs mileage and overall condition. Youβll be asked to confirm that everything noted is accurate by signing a handover form or completing a digital confirmation.
Along with the vehicle itself, please ensure you have the following ready for collection:
π Service History β A fully stamped and up-to-date service book, or a digital equivalent
π Keys β All sets of keys originally supplied, including any spares or fobs
π User Manuals β Vehicle operator or user manuals, either in physical or digital format (if applicable)
β MOT Certificate β If your vehicle is over 3 years old, make sure it has a valid MOT
π Any Additional Documents β Such as handbooks or warranty booklets, if originally provided
Returning these items helps avoid any unnecessary charges or delays. If youβre unsure whether something is needed, feel free to get in touch β weβre happy to help.
If your vehicle has a cherished (private) registration, itβs your responsibility to place it on retention with the DVLA before collection. This process can take several weeks β sometimes up to 12 β so we strongly recommend starting it as soon as possible β³
β οΈ Important: If the vehicle is collected and sold with your private plate still on it, you may not be able to recover it. Once it's gone, it's gone β so please act early to avoid disappointment.
We follow standards set by the BVRLA (British Vehicle Rental & Leasing Association) to ensure a fair and consistent approach when vehicles are returned.
This guide helps drivers understand how to look after their lease vehicle and avoid unnecessary end-of-contract charges. It also sets out an industry-approved definition of what counts as fair wear and tear β so there are no surprises at handover.
